Professor Mark Cooper is the University of Queensland Chair in Prediction-Based Crop Improvement and a world leader in quantitative genetics and crop breeding. His work involves integrating genome prediction and plant growth models into an end-to-end framework for plant improvement.

The ultimate goal of my research project is to better understand the genetic architecture of quantitative traits, especially (but not limited to) polyploidy, with a focus on sugarcane. This may be useful to breeding programs and geneticists interested in complex traits.

I run HighlanderLab, which focuses on using data science, genetics, and breeding to manage and improve populations. We focus on populations used in food, feed and fiber production. We are particularly interested in: (i) genetics and breeding methods, (ii) design and optimization of breeding programs, and (iii) data analysis to decipher biology and find new ways to improve populations.

Professor Hayes has extensive research experience in the genetic improvement of livestock, crops, pasture and aquaculture species, with a focus on the integration of genomic information into breeding programs, including leading numerous large-scale projects that have successfully implemented genomic technologies in livestock and crops industry.

Farhad Hormozdiari is a research scientist on the HealthAI team at Google Research, where he combines genetic data and machine learning techniques to improve understanding of disease across a wide range of populations. His long-term research goals include using genetics and machine learning to improve social well-being. More recently, Farhad has expanded his interests and focus to use deep learning and statistical genetics to understand plant genomics and improve plant resilience to climate change.

Australian Victorian Agricultural Research Institute

Jo is passionate about research that brings tangible benefits to farmers and has focused on her work since she received her PhD in Animal Husbandry and Genetics from the University of New EnglandUse practical tools to illustrate the benefits of making better herd improvement decisions on the farmJo is currently working as a Research Scientist within the Victorian Department of Agriculture's DairyBio program where she uses a multidisciplinary approach to develop and evaluate decision support tools that allow for more informed breeding and management decisions on farm. As a 2018 Endeavor Postdoctoral Fellow, Jo spent six months as a visiting researcher at Teagasc Moorepark in Ireland.

Joe has been active with numerous non-profit organizations throughout the agriculture sector, particularly advocacy and support for youth in agriculture. Jo was awarded the 2020 Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for her involvement and support of young people, her volunteer work and her contribution to dairy research.

Professor Lindiwe Majele Sibanda is a recognized leader, practicing farmer and respected policy advisor with a 30-year career. She is currently Chair of the CGIAR System Committee, Associate Professor at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and Chair of the Council of the Zimbabwe National University of Science and Technology.

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory

Rob Martienssen studies the epigenetic mechanisms that shape and regulate the genome and their impact on transposable elements, first discovered by Barbara McClintock at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. These mechanisms are the basis for clonal propagation of oil palms, and their impact on rainforest conservation and aquatic plants, including duckweed, is being developed in the Martienssen lab for biofuel production and carbon sequestration.

Norwegian Food Research Institute (Nofima)

I work on the design of breeding programmes, including marker assisted and genomic selection programmes, and QTL mapping. I also deal with the management of genetic variation, ie. H. Management of inbreeding, both at the kinship level and at the genomic level.

Director - East Africa Center

Dr Leena Tripathi is Director of the East Africa Center and Director of the Biotechnology Program at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). She leads transgenic and gene editing research at IITA. She has been involved in plant biotechnology research for over 25 years, with a particular interest in crop improvement.
